5-Year Career Aspirations

Where I can go in the next 5 years, according to my supporters

5 years is a long time. Here’s what Steve Jobs has to say about it.

“I think about a year or two, three down the road; we have some projects at Apple that are sort of maybe four years down the road. Five years? Probably like three or four at the most, because things change too much… you can be going down a path, you say, ‘Well in 5 years I want to be here,’ but then something new happens and you just say, ‘Forget that, I want to be over there.’ So most of this 5-year planning that I’ve seen in my life—some of it’s essential, but most of it changes too quickly”

Steve Jobs, as referenced in “Foundr.”, 2024.

My goals regarding the PIDP program are much more front and center. I hope to share what I am talking about soon, but some things should be done before being discussed and others discussed before being done.

In general, technology is moving incredibly quickly, and I find myself spending more and more effort on any given day to keep up with it all.

The amount of new learning as a percentage of effort increases rapidly in times of great change, such as the renaissance, the industrial revolution, the communications revolution, and the artificial intelligence revolution.

In my view, we are in the midst of two simultaneous revolutions, both communications and AI, and I suspect in my lifetime we will see a third, fourth, and fifth. Possibly propulsion power that can move us around the world rapidly at low cost (or even between planets), health-care, that will increase our lifespan by 50 years, and possibly some kind of social economic policy revolution that will more intelligently distribute the incredible gains from technology we are about to capitalize on big-time.

I will be happy if within the next few years, I can integrate and master AI in all of my computer system endeavors. I genuinely think we will be communicating with our computers as if they are little R2D2s and calling on them to do our work interactively, and I’m working at learning how to build and use the systems that will enable me to take part in those benefits without having to earn some exorbitant amount of income to get there.
